Proposal Deadline Extended to March 30, 2009

We are now accepting presentation proposal submissions for the 2009 New Jersey NACADA conference. Below are guidelines and helpful tips for submitting the proposal.  A special thank you to JoAnne Huber and the 2009 National NACADA Conference committee for sharing their call and information!

Who Should Submit a Proposal?

We encourage novice as well as experienced presenters. Advisors, administrators, faculty, counselors, career development specialists, researchers, graduate students—we want to hear from you! If you have techniques or practices to share that address higher education’s academic advising needs or promote the advising profession’s role in enhancing student learning and development, please consider submitting a proposal application. Proposals are particularly welcomed for extensive literature reviews on advising topics, new theories or models for advising approaches, or research on advising topics or student populations.

Submission Procedure

Program session proposals should include the following points:

  • Title of Presentation (titles should be descriptive of the content of the session; they need not reflect the title or theme of the conference)
  • Presenter Information (name, institution, address, phone/fax/e-mail)
  • Names of co-presenters
  • 135 word Abstract
  • Audio-Visual requests

Please fill out the Proposal Form and attach to an email to nacada@sas.rutgers.edu. Please include “Presentation Proposal” in the subject line of the email.

Evaluation Criteria

Proposals and abstracts will be reviewed by members of the conference committee, using these criteria:

  • Clearly stated purpose and objectives
  • Reflective of good writing practices
  • Timeliness of the subject matter
  • Topic’s contribution to the advising field
  • Creativity in an approach to a situation or in ways to manage it
  • Adaptability of ideas to a variety of institutional settings
  • Presentation grounded in research when applicable

Tips to Remember

  • We are not able to offer either an honorarium or a waiver of registration fees to presenters.  Registration fees are $40 before May 15, 2009, and $50 late registration after May 1.
  • All presenters are encouraged to submit electronic versions of handouts or other materials used in their sessions to nacada@sas.rutgers.edu to be shared with conference attendees.
  • Feedback from NACADA and from past conferences has demonstrated that some of the following topics are of great interest for advisors:
    • Uses of Technology for Advising
    • Legal issues
    • Retention/Probation/Persistence
    • New advisor training
    • Faculty advising
    • Advisor career development
    • Transfer between colleges
    • Advising in community colleges
    • Non-traditional students
    • Research and advising
    • Best practices/exemplar programs
