We invite professional and faculty advisers from institutions across the state of New Jersey and our neighbors from the surrounding states to join us for an informative one-day NACADA-sponsored conference:

Tuesday, June 9, 2009
Busch Campus of Rutgers University-New Brunswick

Advising today requires a focus on the individual needs of students that is informed by and responsive to the broad global changes that affect our students, our institutions, and our profession. The 2009 New Jersey State NACADA Drive-in Conference theme “Advising Locally, Thinking Globally” prompts us to engage in conversations about the multiple layers of advising concerns in the 21st Century.

The theme encourages the consideration of the broad spectrum of advising interactions within and between institutions, between professional and faculty advisors, and our role in preparing our students to become global citizens and lifelong scholars. We, as a professional community, are called to think about our role as practitioner-researchers whose daily concerns seek to enhance our understanding of our students’ experience; through examining broad perspectives, the conference will aim to help us move out of business-as-usual assumptions.

In a time of budget cuts and financial uncertainty, advisers must become more creative in building connections with students, colleagues and faculty both within and across our individual institutions. The conference sessions will seek to encourage these conversations and deconstruct the “silo model” as we build on the realization that our future, and our mutual success at preparing our students for challenges ahead, is tightly woven together.
